5G for Robots: gNB Plugin
Integrate Real-World 5G gNB Behavior into Your Robotic Simulations (04.07.2025)
Förderjahr 2024 / Projekt Call #19 / ProjektID: 7394 / Projekt: RoboSim5G

RoboSim5G now supports realistic 5G gNB simulation in Gazebo, laying the groundwork for full 5G end-to-end robotics simulation later this year. The plugin includes a ready-to-use OAI core setup, so users can get started without complex configuration.

5G for Robots: Now with Realistic gNB Simulation

5G is not just about faster data, it is about transforming how robots operate in real-world environments. RoboSim5G is designed for roboticists who want to bring realistic 5G behavior into their simulations. With its latest update, RoboSim5G takes a major step forward by enabling simulation of 5G base stations (gNBs) directly within Gazebo.

New Release

The latest release introduces a fully integrated Gazebo plugin and model for simulating gNBs. These simulated base stations connect to the open-source OAI core network by automatically configuring all the parameters needed for different use cases, which can be defined through Gazebo SDF files. The user can control their placement in the simulation, track them via the ROS 2 pose topic, and monitor gNB-to-AMF connections in real time. This provides a realistic, flexible way to test 5G infrastructure within the simulation workflow.

Coming Soon

A companion UE plugin is under development, which can be attached to mobile robots, to complete the 5G simulation chain. This will enable users to simulate full 5G end-to-end network scenarios.

Development Timeline

🚧 August: UE plugin in development, bringing realistic mobile 5G behavior.

🎯 End of Year: Full 5G stack simulation with UE handovers and QoS support.
